Translating Items to Another Language
While an item is in a Draft state, you can create translations for it in additional languages.
You can click next to an item name on the Items tab to display the Language field, which lists an icon for each language the item’s content is currently available in. A plus symbol appears in the icon for any language the item has yet to be translated to.
- To translate an item into another language, click
in the row for an item on the Items tab (you may need to apply filters first). Then click a language icon that includes a plus symbol. The Add Language page appears, displaying the item’s original content on the right and the translated content on the left.
- In the translation section on the left, review the translations that Authoring automatically generated and revise them as necessary.
- Some item types require translations only for the prompt, some require translations for the prompt and answer options, and some require additional translations for every individual body text element. For more information, see Guide for Translating Authoring Item Types.
- Optional: To preview the item’s content as it will appear to students, click the Preview button for the appropriate language at the bottom of the page.
- Note: If an item is linked to an item set, you cannot preview the item’s translated content until you have also saved the translation for the item set.
- Optional: If you need to remove your edits and reapply the translations that Authoring generated, click Reset Translations at the bottom of the page.
- When you are done translating the item’s content, click Save at the bottom of the page.
- Note: After translating the content for a stimulus, you should also translate the content for the items that are linked to it.
- Optional: To modify the translation after creating it, click
in the row for the item on the Items tab and then click the language icon, which should now display a pencil icon.
- If you update the content for the item’s original language without updating the item’s translated content, an exclamation mark displays for the outdated translation in the language icon. You must update the translated content before you can publish any tests that contain that item.
